Version Cue Comparison

Looking for a Version Cue replacement?
Take a look at Evolphin Zoom. Much more than an Adobe Version Cue replacement, Zoom provides a rich version control feature set, visual asset browsing, screaming fast performance, easier administration, and integrated workflow. We think you’ll agree, there really is no comparison.
Evolphin Zoom Version Cue
Installation Our Marketing person installed Evolphin Zoom Server in 15 minutes. In the unlikely event there is a problem, our Installation Guide will get you back on track. It took our chief architect 3 hours to install and configure the Version Cue server. The installation documentation is incomplete, and he relied heavily on community forums.
Reliability Evolphin Zoom Server comes with a monitoring agent and will automatically restart if the server goes down for any reason. Version Cue has no monitoring agent, and the server must be manually re-started if it crashes. Occasionally, a manual re-start fails, and the machine must be re-booted to start the server.
Database Performance
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom utilizes a patent-pending database, RevDB, optimized for the storage of binary assets. Zoom can import digital assets more than 57x faster than Version Cue. Commits, checkouts and updates are also faster. Version Cue uses an off-the-shelf RDBMS, MySQL for persistence. MySQL is not an optimal choice for large binary objects because performance is very slow.
Visual Versioning
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Evolphin Zoom features visual search, a visual history log, and animated visual comparison of digital asset versions. What²s more, Evolphin Zoom versions thumbnails on the server. Version Cue offers no visual asset search, or visual comparison of versions.
Overlay icons or Folder coloring
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom creates bread crumb trails using overlay icons or folder coloring within Windows Explorer or Mac Finder to make it a snap to spot changes, un-versioned files, newly added files, moved or renamed files. Version Cue does not have any overlay icons or folder coloring.
Context aware menus Zoom dynamically changes the menu items based on the state of the file, making it easy to choose the appropriate version control operation. Version Cue has a static menu that does not change as a folder or files state changes, making it more difficult to select the appropriate version control operation.
Version Control
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom features multi-user concurrent remote version store, rollbacks, drag-and-drop for easy import, and all functions are project-aware.  Refer to our feature comparison matrix for a full list of Zoom features. Version cue offers basic version control but lacks critical features like lock status, incoming changeset alerts, context sensitive menus, selective synchronization, name-space management
Updates
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom has a sophisticated change management system that allows incoming changes to be selectively synchronized. For example, a user may choose to only update to a published version of an asset without updating to an intermediate version. Version Cue does not have an explicit update operation. Changes saved to the Adobe Drive are synchronized by all connected drives on the client desktop when a refresh operation is performed. There is no way to selectively synchronize changesets on the local desktop.
Commit
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom provides a tree view of changes. The user can examine and toggle any file or folder in the color-coded tree of changes in the commit dialog. Version Cue does not allow a user to de-select files or sub-folders from check-in. Users must check-in individual files or all files and folders within a specified directory.
Revert
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom supports several revert operations, including revert data changes, and revert rename, deletes or moves. Users can revert to the last updated state from the server without connecting to remote server. Version Cue only supports promoting revisions. There is no support for reverting locally made changes to the last updated state from the server. Requires remote access to promote older versions.
Locking
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom supports file locking and can track who has locked the file last. Zoom also allows an entire folder to be locked by selecting all files in the folder during the lock operation. Version Cue does not enable locking of checked out files, nor is there any tracking of locked files.
Offline Mode Zoom has an offline mode in which the user's local copy contains checked out assets. The user can make changes to the copy without needing to connect to the server. A connection is only needed when the user is ready to check-in changes to the remote server. Network outages do not prevent the user from editing their working copy. Version Cue requires an always-on connection to the server to save or retrieve versions.
Milestone Publishing
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom allows a project lead or administrator to publish to a repository revision. All assets up to that revision are deemed published. Users can choose to synchronize with published assets only. Version Cue does not have any milestone publishing capabilities. Users are exposed to intermediate or work in progress versions of assets. It is not possible to checkout published assets only. Nor is there any support for tagging versions.
Namespace Tracking
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom uses patent-pending graph theory algorithms to infer dependencies amongst assets. This enables Zoom to detect and prevent accidents such as the accidental deletion of a directory on a server while another user is adding or modifying files in that directory on his desktop. With Zoom, concurrent namespace changes and file modifications can co-exist. Version Cue does not support any kind of version history for namespace changes.  Also, Version Cue cannot reconcile concurrent file modifications and namespace changes.
Conflict Resolution
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom detects conflicts and proposes resolution options. For conflicts involving namespace changes (eg, a folder rename or move) and file content changes, Zoom can automatically merge the changes without causing any modifications to be lost. Conflicts can cause existing modifications or versions to be lost.
Changeset Management
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom creates atomic changesets when check-in is performed.  Zoom enables rollback of an entire changeset. Version Cue does not have any notion of a changeset. There is no ability to see incoming changes based on a changeset grouping. It offers basic version control, such as promoting an older version to the current version, but there is no way to ³rollback´ an entire set of changes.
Changelist
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom supports the notion of a changelist so that users can categorize changes into task lists. A changelist can contain an arbitrary collection of versioned files. During commit, the user can choose to commit only a specific changelist. Version Cue does not have any notion of a changelist. This makes it more difficult for the user to remember and manage the list of changes to  check-in.
Mounted Drive
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Instead of a mounted drive, Zoom has a remote repository browser that acts similar to a mounted drive, and also provides an advanced version control mechanism to protect against lost versions. Version Cue comes with Adobe Drive, a mounted drive that shows up with a drive letter on Windows or as a mounted drive on MacOS. It acts more like a network share rather than a version store. From a version control perspective, it is critically flawed in that versions are easily lost if proper version control practices (check-in and check-out) are not followed.
Workflow
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom includes sophisticated workflow functions to support hierarchical reviews, multiple approval policies, automated workflow triggers, sign-off and publishing of approved assets. Version Cue doesn't provide any workflow automation except for rudimentary PDF review for Illustrator files.
Change Notifications
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom has a change-monitoring agent running on each user's desktop that tracks changes to a project and issues alerts in the system tray/menu bar icon about pending updates. Version Cue does not provide any change notifications.
Reporting
Zoom Publishing Changes Slides
Zoom includes trends analysis, version control and workflow related reports all available from the web administration portal. Version Cue does not have any reporting capabilities.
