Auto Update InDesign Link
According to Adobe InDesign link management guide:
In InDesign linked artwork is connected to, but remains independent of, the document, resulting in a smaller document. You can modify linked artwork using transformation tools and effects; however, you cannot select and edit individual components in the artwork. You can use the linked graphic many times without significantly increasing the size of the document; you can also update all links at once. When you export or print, the original graphic is retrieved, creating the final output from the full resolution of the originals.
In theory this is a great concept, but in practise:
- Broken Links: Linked assets are accidentally renamed, moved or deleted as multiple team members collaborate on the same InDesign document, leading to broken links. This is frustrating, because in addition to the creative work itself, you have to constantly chase down the placed links.
- Incompatible Version: Even if the link is intact, the actual content could have been changed by a team member: an image re-size could throw off the whole document layout
- Cross platform mixup: Across platforms (Windows and MacOS) links do not function, because shared folders are mounted with different path names. For instance shared folder, "/Documents/Artwork", on a server, "dracula", could be mapped on a MacOS desktop to "/Volume/Documents/ArtWork". The same shared folder on Windows, could be mapped to "R:/ArtWork". If the InDesign document is edited on Windows and a link to "R:/ArtWork/logo.ai" was placed inside it, the link will not work on MacOS because that link is not recognized in MacOS.
Evolphin Zoom solves the above problems through support for automatic InDesign link versioning. For instance, whenever the linked asset is committed to the Zoom server, a trigger auto updates the file share on the Zoom Server with the latest version of the linked assets, thereby notifying Adobe InDesign to refresh the links.
