Large unstructured data like Digital Assets cannot be managed efficiently using traditional database technology such as RDBMS (Relational Database Management Systems). Most Digital Asset Management (DAM) vendors resort to a two-pronged approach to manage their files – files reside on a network share and metadata is stored separately in a traditional RDBMS.


This approach has a number of flaws including performance and scalability bottlenecks as well as the lack of transactional semantics when updating both metadata and file data. This leads to inconsistencies in the data. In fact, most vendors provide an administrative option to re-catalog and re-index the entire asset collection when data becomes inconsistent and out of sync.


Zoom ships with our patent-pending custom database, RevDB, that provides a transactional file system and a multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) database tightly integrated to deal with the short-comings of RDBMS and network share based approaches currently applied to DAM. RevDB can provide performance gains of over 50X compared to traditional solutions.


In addition, the database is version-aware, making it ideal for work-in-progress creative workflows. Most competing DAM solutions store a full copy of each file or version, which means 25 variants of a 2GB Photoshop file would require 50GB of storage space. With the volume of digital assets exploding, IT administrators are constantly scrambling to deal with storage expansion needs and corporate networks are being clogged with the constant transfer of large digital assets.


Data deduplication is a specialized data compression technique for eliminating duplicate copies of repeating data. Historically, deduplication technology has only been available with the use of expensive enterprise back-end storage systems. For the first time, Evolphin has implemented front-end deduplication that ensures that when a designer changes a digital asset, only the modified bytes are transmitted and stored on the server.


This patent-pending deduplication technology can achieve up to 99.9% data compression on changes saved as versions. When copies of digital assets are made in the Evolphin Zoom repository, the same deduplication technology eliminates the storage costs of duplicate files by just storing a pointer to the digital asset (also called Smart Copy) and the specific version from which a copy was made.


This dramatically cuts down on network bandwidth and storage requirements. Remote sites such as a branch office or an external partner can download digital asset versions in seconds in what used to take hours. Many of Evolphin’s customers have reported a dramatic reduction in storage growth after implementing Zoom.




Creative processes can span a multi-disciplinary team of stakeholders ranging from account managers, project managers, marketing, designers, programmers, purchasing, finance, legal, production and delivery teams. Each creative organization follows a set of repeatable processes in order to produce quality digital assets.. The process requires reviewing and iterating the produced assets multiple times. Many creative organizations can produce 25-30 iterations before they achieve the desired outcome.

The Zoom Workflow engine automatically routes the tasks and associated assets between stakeholders eliminating the inevitable torrent of emails to track progress and manage the activities manually. End-users simply interact with the Zoom DAM client to sign-off on tasks. Zoom Workflow functions behind the scenes to schedule and orchestrate all the activities needed to proceed from brief to completion.
